Sports X 2008 7 on 7 HS Passing Tournament
Chicago "CBC" takes First Place !!!!

2008 Sports X 7 on 7 HS Passing Tournament Champions !
Making the trip from Chicago,Il. to Elpaso, Tx was the least of the battle for the Chicago Blue Chips (CBC) 7 on 7 football team. Next was the 100 plus degree temperatures and dry heat of the desert southwest. After hotel checkin and getting a good meal the team was off for a tour of the Sun Bowl and the Larry Durham Center. The trip down the stadium steps and onto the Sun Bowl turf gave CBC a taste of direct sun and no humidity. Next day was the true challenge, facing Texas football teams! Coronado, Bel Air, El Paso High, Sierra Blanca, San Elizario, Chapparal and others would have a huge say in which team took home "The Golden Football".
Those attending on Friday afternoon saw some great 7 on 7 football. All teams competing showed the fiber it takes to compete in the sport that feeds Texas. Underdog Chapparal held their ground againt some teams with superior talent. Sierra Blanca again made the drive to El Paso to compete and gain strength in it's growing reputation in West Texas football. Even though some key players were not present due to attending out of state football camps, Coronado, Belair, and San Elizario came to compete and win. Under new head football coach Ronnie Hernandez El Paso High had only a few week of practice under their belts before the tournament. If the overall team performance is any indicator of things to come.. look out opponents!
In getting past El Paso High, Chapparal was making a huge run at the championship trophy but had to settle for 3rd place. The championship game saw Coronados Thunderbirds who won the 1st Annual Sports X 7 on 7 in 2006 and went on to be district champs take the field againt Chicago! Having lost a game and playing back to back the TBirds would have to overcome sun and fatigue to claim 1st place. The battle of a double elimination tournament cranked up play in the the championship game due to the fact that Coronado would have to beat Chicago not once but twice. After a two game exchange of well executed plays by both teams CBC ended up claiming the " Golden Football for 2008!
A huge thanks to all the teams that competed in this years event. 2009 will see even more out of state teams take the Sports X Challenge to compete against some of the best talent around the nation!
